The idea behind 6Y1V is a
culmination of the life long dreams of KY1V (David), K1LZ
(Krassy) and 6Y5GC (George).
Not unlike amateur radio
operators worldwide, each had dreams of large antenna arrays,
expensive transceivers and powerful amplifiers. A dream of
winning contests and DX'ing.
In 2002, KY1V planned to erect
an antenna farm on 3 acres at his Kentucky home. He began
purchasing Rohn 45G tower, rotating rings, antennas, and other
hardware necessary to build his dream array, stacked monobanders
on a rotating tower!
After having Matt (KC1XX),
from XXTowers, survey his property in 2003, he discovered he couldn't erect the 140'
rotating tower without the guy wires leaving the adjacent lot
and coming onto the main property of the house where his family
enjoys their daily activities. At the time, the 18 acres behind the
house was not for sale and it was determined that having guy
wires on the main property just wasn't accceptable.
Shortly thereafter, David met
Colin (6Y5CR) and George (6Y5GC) on the air and visited them in
Jamaica the next morning. After a brief tour of the Island,
George brought David to his home in the hills just above the sea
coast town of Hopewell.
David and George made an
agreement to utilize George's property to fulfill David's dream
of a major contest and DX station.
Over the course of the next 18
months, David continued purchasing the necessary equipment to
complete the station. Expensive antennas, radios and amplifiers
were all purchased and stored in Kentucky. The project lingered
and the equipment slowly accumulated.
In 2005, David met Krassy
(K1LZ). They became friends and soon thereafter Krassy invited
David on an expedition to St. Paul Island (CY9SS).
Krassy and David became close
friends and David shared his plans for Jamaica. Krassy had his
own plans for a station on another Island but they too were lingering. When
Krassy learned that David had accumulated a mass of material for
the 6Y1V project, he asked when it was going to be finished and
how he could help move the project along.
In 2006, Krassy and David formed a
partnership and the project moved quickly forward. Within 4
months, the remaining equipment was purchased, a shipping
container loaded and everything was sent to Jamaica. (Importing
it all is a future story!)
The dream was just on the
horizon and through the effort of many friends, 7 months later all the antennas, towers and
equipment were finally installed.
Welcome to 6Y1V.
